German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier declared on Monday that Germany is ready to assume a key role in Europe’s defense, at a time when NATO is facing unprecedented challenges not seen in decades.
Speaking at an official ceremony at NATO headquarters in Brussels, marking the anniversary of Germany’s membership in the alliance, Steinmeier emphasized that Berlin has clearly understood the message from its allies and is committed to increasing its contribution to collective defense.
“We have received the message you can rely on us… We will strive to make Germany, through both its military and infrastructure, the backbone of conventional defense in Europe,” Steinmeier stated, referring to the geopolitical developments that have shaken the continent’s security balance.
The German president highlighted current challenges such as Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and increasing pressure from the United States for greater European commitment, stressing that Germany now holds a “decisive position.”
In this context, Germany has recently approved an ambitious fiscal plan that includes a €500 billion fund dedicated to infrastructure and strengthening defense capabilities.
The new fund, which circumvents regular borrowing rules, will allow for a significant expansion of Germany’s military capacities at a time when Europe is seeking greater security autonomy.
The increase in the defense budget comes just ahead of an expected political leadership change, with Friedrich Merz set to take over as Chancellor in May, replacing Olaf Scholz.
