Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has been symbolically urged to renounce the order awarded by his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, as Serbian lawyer Čedomir Stojković argues that Serbia cannot enter the EU as long as Vučić retains Putin’s honor.
In a statement coinciding with the French President’s visit to Serbia, Stojković said, “It is clear that the President of Serbia does not want to be part of Europe as long as he holds onto the medal given to him by Europe’s enemy, regardless of whether he has bought 12 or 200 Rafale jets.”
“While President Aleksandar Vučić, in a meeting with Emmanuel Macron, is trying to show that he is ending Serbia’s servitude to Putin, today we reminded him that there is a much easier way to do this: We submitted a request to A. Vučić to renounce the order/medal given by Putin, which he still holds. Along with the request, we delivered a cake named ‘Serbia’s EU Perspective,’ and the cake is just like that: crooked, rusty, melted. It is clear that there is no EU entry as long as its president holds Putin’s order,” he wrote.
According to him, it is the values of a country that reflect its European aspirations.
“It is clear that the President of Serbia does not want to be part of Europe as long as he holds onto the medal given by Europe’s enemy, regardless of whether he has bought 12 or 200 Rafale jets. Egypt also has Rafale planes, so this does not mean that el-Sisi has a pro-European policy! Qatar also has Rafale planes, even though they are governed by Sharia law! Values — that is what we measure in Europe. And that Putin-Vučić medal/order is a crystal-clear reflection of those values. Vučić will renounce either the order or the European future. It is an absolute matter,” he concludes.
Notably, Putin awarded a medal to Vučić a few years ago. According to Russian Federation laws, this medal can only be awarded after 20 years of contribution to Russia.
