Former NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has weighed in on Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election and the unease his return to the White House has sparked.
In an op-ed for Financial Times, Stoltenberg argues that Europe should not despair over Trump’s win, suggesting instead that his return to the presidency presents an opportunity for Europe to demonstrate that it is a genuine partner, not just a beneficiary of someone else’s engagement.
“The American people have spoken. Across the Atlantic, many are worried about the U.S. commitment to European security. In FT, I argue that we should not despair. Trump’s return challenges us to show that we are true partners, not free riders without contribution,” Stoltenberg wrote.
