Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, has confirmed growing interest from several European clubs in Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, but made clear the German club’s intention to retain the experienced player.
Speaking at a press conference, Rolfes stated:
“Granit Xhaka is an important player for us. Our priority is to keep him in the squad. Of course, there’s a lot of interest in him. One thing is clear: a transfer would only happen if it’s a favorable situation for both parties.”
He added that Xhaka still has three years remaining on his contract, which runs until 2028, and that Leverkusen is satisfied with his contributions.
“Our goal is for Granit to stay. The player himself hasn’t commented on any of this,” Rolfes said.
Among the clubs reportedly interested in Xhaka are AC Milan, Premier League side Sunderland, and wealthy Saudi club Neom SC. Sunderland, in particular, is said to be seriously monitoring him as a potential leader and experienced presence in midfield.
Nonetheless, Leverkusen remains firm: any potential departure would have to benefit both the club and the player.
