Swedish prosecutors have charged three individuals with planning terrorist attacks in Sweden on behalf of the extremist group Islamic State (IS), revealing links to organized crime in the country.
According to the Swedish Prosecution Authority, charges have been filed against three individuals and a fourth, accusing them of being members of a terrorist organization. The alleged crimes occurred between September 2023 and March 2024.
The suspects, all Swedish nationals, were arrested in March in Stockholm following an extensive investigation, Swedish police stated earlier.
Prosecutors allege that the three men planned attacks intended to kill or injure people but did not specify the targets.
“The purpose of the act was to instill fear among the population or groups of the population in IS’s name and destabilize or destroy Sweden’s essential political, constitutional, economic, or social structures,” the indictment states.
The accused are reportedly linked to an Islamic organization in Tyresö, near Stockholm, and connected to organized crime in Sweden. Investigators also uncovered ties to IS, particularly its branch in Somalia, prosecutors said.
Authorities emphasized that the suspects were arrested to prevent a potential attack.
