The newly formed Syrian authorities, established by rebel groups that ousted President Bashar al-Assad on December 8, have announced the appointment of Assad Hasan al-Chibani as the Foreign Minister of the transitional government.

“The General Command announces the appointment of Assad Hasan al-Chibani as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the new Syrian government,” the statement from the new leadership reads. It highlights that al-Chibani joined the Syrian revolution in 2011.

Born in 1987 in the Hasake region of northeastern Syria, al-Chibani graduated with a degree in English literature from the University of Damascus and later earned a master’s in political science and international relations. Known also by the alias Zaid al-Atar, he recently held discussions with German and French delegations in Damascus, aiming to establish diplomatic ties with the new government.

As the transitional government consolidates power, Syrian soldiers are reportedly being interrogated and offered amnesty in exchange for distancing themselves from Assad’s regime.
