Tomas Szunyog, Head of the European Union Office in Kosovo and EU Special Representative, gave his final interview before leaving Kosovo at the end of his four-year term.
Szunyog highlighted the visa liberalization for Kosovars as one of the most positive moments of his tenure.
However, he also recalled September 24, 2023, and the attack in Banjskë as one of the most challenging moments he faced.
“I will never forget September 24, 2023. I was woken up by a phone call informing me of the violent attack in Banjskë. It was a Sunday, and I had to act quickly to mobilize everyone, both here and in Brussels. I was shocked and distressed when I learned that Afrim Bunjaku was killed in the line of duty. The scale of this operation was unprecedented, and the amount of seized weapons was massive. This incident was a strong wake-up call, and its consequences are still evident today. I want to reiterate the need for a thorough investigation to effectively conclude and hold all involved accountable. Another very difficult day was May 29, 2023—the day of unprovoked attacks against KFOR troops in northern Kosovo, which resulted in the injury of several of them,” he told Telegrafi.
