TAIPEI, Taiwan, Jan 20 (AP) – A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan shortly after midnight on Tuesday, causing structural damage and injuring at least 27 people, local authorities reported.

Among the injured were six individuals, including a one-month-old baby, who were rescued from a collapsed house in the Nansi District of Tainan.

The Juwei Bridge on a provincial highway was also reported damaged, although no fatalities have been confirmed. Rescue teams are continuing to assess the damage in affected areas.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the township of Dapu, Chiayi County, at a depth of 9.7 kilometers, according to officials.

The region experienced multiple aftershocks early Tuesday morning, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious as assessments continue.
