Former Albanian national team midfielder Taulant Xhaka remains one of the most beloved figures in Albanian football. Retired from professional play, Xhaka gave a heartfelt interview on the official channels of the Albanian Football Federation, speaking openly about everything from his debut with the red-and-black jersey to his thoughts on the current national team.
Xhaka described his debut with the Albanian national team as a deeply emotional experience, which also ended in victory.
“I am a fan of Albania, of the team. Wearing this jersey is an honor, and I believe it’s the most beautiful in the world. How do I remember my debut? With great emotions – it was my debut with the national team, and we won. It was like a dream. I didn’t fully realize it at first, but after the victory, I understood, and my whole family was proud of me,” Xhaka said.
Reflecting on his most memorable and challenging moments with the national team, he added:
“Unforgettable moments? Not really. I’ve had many happy moments, but I was sad after the match against Serbia. I never made huge sacrifices, but I always gave my best. I would have given my life for this jersey. Naturally, there’s a lot of responsibility – you have to be a leader and keep the younger players close.”
Xhaka also praised the current Albanian squad as they prepare for the World Cup playoffs:
“The national team has come a long way. The players are young and talented. It’s much better now than before,” he said.
When asked if he sees a player reminiscent of himself, Xhaka pointed to Qazim Laçi:
“He even wears my old number, 14. This group has the right mentality for the playoffs. Each player performs in his own club, but they have quality. I believe they can succeed. Fans are crucial – they are the 12th player for us.”
Concluding his interview, Xhaka delivered a message to the Albanian players:
“The national team jersey is honor and pride. I would tell the players: give your maximum. Play with heart, and victory will follow automatically.”
