The trial concerning the tear gas incident in the Kosovo Assembly failed to take place today for former deputies Albulena Haxhiu, Donika Kadaj, and Pal Lekaj, reports Rks News.
The accused face charges of “unauthorized possession of weapons” for allegedly bringing tear gas canisters into the Assembly chamber in February 2016 while serving as members of parliament.
In May 2021, the Pristina Basic Court acquitted them due to lack of evidence. However, following an appeal by the Prosecutor’s Office, the Court of Appeals overturned the verdict in October 2022 and ordered a full retrial.
The case originally sparked significant public and political reactions, as the tear gas incident was a form of protest against internal political processes, including the demarcation agreement with Montenegro and the dialogue with Serbia.
The next session is expected to proceed with the presence of the defendants and their legal representatives.
