Energy Minister Sanja Bozhinovska has raised serious concerns about alleged large-scale corruption at the Bitola Thermal Power Plant (TEC Manastir), far exceeding the €6.5 million uncovered in the “Additive” investigation. Speaking to Radio Free Europe, Bozhinovska emphasized the need for comprehensive audits of energy facilities, including MEPSO and TEC Manastir, to identify potential irregularities.
Call for Audits
Bozhinovska revealed that shortly after assuming office last year, she engaged the State Auditor to initiate thorough reviews across all energy facilities.
“I’ve been informed that approximately €400 million were spent on electricity procurement. While the €6.5 million in the ‘Additive’ case is significant, it’s just the beginning. I hope this investigation leads to judicial outcomes, and that similar irregularities are addressed,” she said.
Larger Crimes Suspected
When asked whether corruption at TEC Manastir extends beyond the €6.5 million figure, Bozhinovska replied decisively:
“Yes, I believe it does.”
Ongoing Investigations
The Energy Ministry has been proactive in addressing these allegations, supporting ongoing investigations and calling for accountability. Bozhinovska expressed hope for a judicial resolution to all cases of financial misconduct.
The revelations come amidst increasing scrutiny of North Macedonia’s energy sector, with allegations of mismanagement and corruption casting a shadow over critical infrastructure.
