Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on Thursday that Tehran currently has no plans to meet with the United States, directly contradicting U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that Washington intended to hold talks with Iran next week.
In an interview on state TV, Araqchi said that Tehran was assessing whether further discussions with the U.S. would be in its interest. This comes after five previous rounds of negotiations were cut short by recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities by Israel and the U.S.
The U.S. and Israel maintained that these strikes were aimed at curbing Iran’s capacity to develop nuclear weapons. Iran, however, insists its nuclear program is solely for civilian use.
Araqchi acknowledged that the damages to the nuclear sites “were not little” and that relevant authorities are currently evaluating the new realities of Iran’s nuclear program. He indicated that this assessment would inform Iran’s future diplomatic position.
