Students and citizens in multiple Serbian cities paid tribute to the 16 victims of the collapse of the main railway station canopy in Novi Sad, marking ten months since the tragedy on November 1, 2024.
According to Beta Agency, commemorations were held at 11:52 a.m.—the exact time of the incident—at the Novi Sad station, as well as in Belgrade (Bulevar kralja Aleksandra), Niš, and Kraljevo.
Participants carried banners reading:
- “11:52, Novi Sad last station! We must not forgive the guilty”
- “Never again”
- “You will all be held accountable”
Flowers and banners with bloody handprints, symbolizing protest, were also displayed. Commemorative gatherings took place in Čačak, Paraćin, and Novi Pazar.
Protests and Calls for Accountability
Over the past ten months, student and citizen protests across Serbia have demanded accountability for the deaths of 16 people and the serious injury of one individual at the Novi Sad station.
On August 1, 2025, the Serbian Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime announced the arrest of 11 individuals suspected of corruption connected to the modernization project of the railway from Novi Sad to the Hungarian border. The project included the reconstruction of the Novi Sad main station, where the canopy collapse occurred on November 1, 2024.
Among those arrested was former Minister of Construction Tomislav Momirović, along with former Minister Goran Vesić, who is currently receiving hospital treatment. All suspects face charges of abuse of official position.
The Prosecutor’s Office stated that the arrests are the result of ongoing investigations by the Task Force for Financial Flows related to the railway modernization project.
The main railway station in Novi Sad reopened in July 2024, following a three-year reconstruction project.
