Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to hold a major meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation next week, amid rising tensions following recent Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian military airbases.
According to Kremlin correspondent Pavel Zarubin, the high-level meeting will take place alongside other official events, including the “Time of Heroes” ceremony, where Putin will present state medals and awards in honor of national holidays.
“This week’s Security Council meeting will be significant. Understandably, many are eagerly awaiting it,” said Zarubin.
In addition to this meeting, Putin is expected to acknowledge Medical Workers’ Day on June 15 and continue preparations for the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
Tensions have escalated since June 1, when Ukraine launched a series of drone attacks on Russian airbases. The drones, reportedly hidden in trucks and remotely operated, successfully targeted sensitive military infrastructure deep inside Russia.
In retaliation, Russia has launched a massive assault on Ukrainian territory, with reports of widespread strikes across Kyiv and other cities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the drone attacks were part of a coordinated operation codenamed “Web”, aiming to disrupt Russian air capabilities.
The United States acknowledged that Russia would likely intensify its retaliatory attacks, especially in response to hits on its air force bases.
Next week’s Kremlin meeting is expected to focus on national security, defense strategy, and internal stability, particularly in the wake of military vulnerabilities exposed by the Ukrainian strikes.
