The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into 2.6 million Tesla vehicles following reports of crashes allegedly linked to the company’s remote-control system.

According to affected drivers, the system provided insufficient time to avoid collisions, Reuters reports.

Ongoing Investigations

This investigation follows an earlier probe initiated in October last year, targeting 2.4 million Tesla vehicles equipped with self-driving software. That inquiry was prompted by reports of four accidents associated with the autonomous driving feature.

Focus of Current Probe

The latest investigation centers on Tesla’s “Smart System,” designed to detect parked vehicles or objects. The system’s effectiveness and potential safety risks are under scrutiny as regulators aim to determine whether it played a role in reported accidents.

Tesla has yet to issue a public statement regarding the investigation, which could result in further recalls or regulatory action depending on the findings.
