Texas National Guard troops have arrived in the Chicago area, marking an escalation in President Donald Trump’s “war” with local authorities.
In recent weeks, there has been a visible increase in anti-immigrant forces in Chicago, along with violent clashes in Broadview, where law enforcement officers were recorded using tear gas and pepper spray against protesters, according to The Guardian.
The new military presence follows a decision by Judge April Perry, who declined to immediately block the troops’ entry into the city while awaiting a lawsuit filed by the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago against Trump’s administration.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also signed an executive order prohibiting ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents from operating on city-owned properties.
“City property and private businesses that do not consent will no longer serve as launch points for these raids,” Johnson said during the signing on Monday.
Meanwhile, the White House accused him of “aiding and abetting illegal immigrant murderers, rapists, traffickers, and gang members.”
