Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi has declared himself not guilty of all charges related to obstructing justice in the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. The charges stem from his alleged involvement in influencing witnesses in a war crimes trial. Thaçi’s self-declaration of innocence was made in writing on January 6, after he had previously refused to provide a statement before the pre-trial judge in December, reports RFE.
The new indictment, confirmed on November 29, accuses Thaçi, along with four other individuals, of attempting to interfere with prosecution witnesses. Thaçi faces multiple charges, including attempting to hinder official duties and revealing confidential information about witnesses.
This case follows Thaçi’s ongoing trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity, with the Special Court handling cases related to the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). The trial is being closely watched in Kosovo, where Thaçi maintains his innocence and insists that he has no political ambitions, stating that his legal battles do not represent a threat to the country.
