The Agency for Information and Privacy (AIP) has called on political parties to protect citizens’ personal data during the electoral campaign for the February 9th elections. In a statement sent to the media, the AIP stated that, in overseeing the enforcement of the law, specifically the protection of citizens’ personal data, it has received complaints from citizens in recent years regarding political parties’ unauthorized use of personal data. These complaints relate to direct marketing practices, which have been addressed in accordance with the law.

“In order to ensure the enforcement of the law for the protection of personal data and at the same time to avoid any action by the Agency against political parties and entities involved in the electoral campaign, the Agency requests political parties to comply with legal obligations for protecting citizens’ personal data by not exposing personal data during communication via email, SMS messages, or phone calls without prior consent,” the statement said.

The Agency has offered cooperation with political entities to ensure the respect of citizens’ rights to personal data protection and has called for any personal information collected during the voter registration process, for the purpose of communication with citizens during the electoral campaign, to be used in compliance with legal requirements.
