Lulzim Fushtica, the Director of Emergencies in the Municipality of Prishtina, announced that the Kosovo Police has established a Directorate for the capital city police, and the project to create this unit is now in its final stages.

“The only thing remaining is the location; everything else has been completed. The Kosovo Police has formed the Directorate for the Capital City, the capacities have been allocated, and it will soon be officially launched,” Fushtica said, speaking to RTV21.

Around 600 police officers are expected to make up the special unit to serve Pristina. The capital city police will include investigators, patrol units, a rapid response team, and other auxiliary units. Citizens are welcoming this security decision from the authorities.

“Yes, every capital should have its own police, and it’s very necessary for Pristina as well because people come from all over, so it’s important that the capital city has its own police,” one citizen commented.

“Of course, the capital should have its own police force,” another added.

As part of the plan for the Capital City Police, which was first envisioned in 2018 following the approval of the Law on Prishtina, Fushtica also mentioned the installation of security cameras throughout the capital.

“A portion of the cameras have already been installed, and they will be placed all over the city. These cameras have already yielded results, and their monitoring center will be located at the police station of the capital,” Fushtica explained.

Security expert Bedri Elezi stated that the creation of a police unit specifically for the capital will ease the work of the Kosovo Police in coordination with regional organizations.

“With a capital city police force, public security will be better organized, especially in areas where police presence or patrols are deemed necessary. This will make the work of the Kosovo Police more efficient,” Fushtica added.

Although public security in Kosovo has been compromised at times, a 2023 report from the American company Gallup ranked Kosovo among the top 24 safest countries in the world.
