A Polish national identified as Pawel K. was arrested on suspicion of participating in the preparation of the assassination of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by spying and revealing information about airport security.
He was arrested in Poland on charges that he was ready to help the Russian military intelligence service in a plot to kill the Ukrainian president, according to a statement from the Polish prosecutor’s office.
Poland’s national prosecutor’s office said the man sought contact with Russians directly involved in the war in Ukraine and was expected to pass on detailed information about the Rzeszow-Jasionka airport in southeastern Poland, near the border with Ukraine.
If found guilty, he could face up to eight years in prison, the BBC reports.
Last year, Polish authorities said they had arrested a group of foreign nationals on suspicion of spying for Russia.
They were reported to have installed dozens of cameras, including several around Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport.
On Thursday, neighboring Germany arrested two suspected Russian spies suspected of plotting to sabotage German military aid to Ukraine.
