U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed his true motive for mediating an end to the war in Ukraine: his concern that he might not make it to heaven after death.
“I want to try and go to heaven, if possible,” he explained. “I hear I’m not doing so well… But if I do get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons,” Trump said, referring to his peace efforts in Ukraine.
The New York Times noted that this is a highly unusual statement for any president, and particularly strange coming from Trump. A man whom many of his supporters view as a prophet now openly admits he is no saint.
It is rare for Trump to speak in such a way, especially about his own death. Now 79, he avoids the subject. When he turned 78, he remarked: “There comes a point when you don’t want to hear ‘Happy Birthday.’”
Later on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked whether Trump was joking when he mentioned heaven.
“I think the President was serious,” she responded. “I think the President wants to go to heaven – just as we all hope to.”
