The U.S. government announced today the imposition of economic sanctions on Iranian security officials accused of coordinating the repression of protests in the country.
“Iranian officials have responded to peaceful protests with violence, ranging from mass killings in the streets to attacks on the wounded and on hospitals,” said U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
In response, he added, the Department is implementing a new series of economic sanctions targeting Iranian interests.
In particular, U.S. authorities are targeting Ali Larijani, the head of Iran’s highest security body, due to his position as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.
