The United States has serious concerns that the results released by Venezuela’s election authority, which declared President Nicolas Maduro the winner of a third term, do not reflect the votes of the people.

This is what the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday.

Just minutes after the authority said Maduro had won the presidential election, Blinken interrupted a speech at a meeting of Indo-Pacific nations to comment on the developments.

“We have seen the announcement of the Electoral Commission of Venezuela. We have serious concerns that the results do not reflect the will of the Venezuelan people,” said Blinken.

He said that the international community is closely watching the developments there and will respond.

“It is very important that each vote is counted accurately and transparently, that election officials immediately share the information with opposition and election observers without any delay, and that the election authorities publish the detailed vote tables,” he said.
