The issue of opening the Ibër Bridge was mentioned by the Government of Kosovo shortly before the date for the next parliamentary elections was set. For this claim, the government was criticized by both the opposition in Kosovo and its international friends, who saw such an action as unnecessary.
In contrast, the opposition views it as an electoral move, made on the eve of the parliamentary elections.
Regarding whether this is merely an electoral promise or if the government’s claim can actually be realized, political scientist and expert Fahredin Majkovci spoke to ‘Bota Sot’.
He says that the entire commitment of this government should not be reduced to just the issue of the Ibër Bridge.
“The engagement of the Kurti Government in improving the lives of citizens in the north of the country in all dimensions should be appreciated. Consequently, this should not be reduced to the issue of the opening or not of the bridge over the Ibër River,” he assesses.
Majkovci states that, given Kurti’s positions and discussions with international friends regarding this issue, he should continue in this direction and expects the bridge to be opened.
“Considering the positions of our international friends (USA, QUINT ambassadors, KFOR, etc.), who have articulated their positions almost identically, emphasizing that ‘the opening of the bridge should be a joint act through a coordinated operation with international factors,’ as well as Prime Minister Kurti’s stance in the Government meeting, where he discussed the issue of the bridge’s opening during meetings in the United States and visits made to Kosovo in recent weeks, I believe that Prime Minister Kurti’s commitment to opening the bridge should continue, and I expect the bridge to be opened,” he emphasizes.
According to him, bridges should connect people, not symbolize police and checkpoints.
“Therefore, this is a matter of the Republic of Kosovo, and the time has come for this bridge to be opened,” he concludes.
