The Kosovo Post Office opened its first branch in North Mitrovica on Thursday.

High-ranking officials from the Government of Kosovo, including Minister of Economy Artane Rizvanolli and Minister of Local Government Administration Elbert Krasniqi, attended the opening of this branch early in the morning, as reported by Radio Free Europe. Some activists and representatives from the Serbian political party, Democratic Party of Serbs, protested against the opening of this branch.

Minister Rizvanolli stated that the Kosovo Post Office aims to provide postal services to everyone across Kosovo, and that the newly opened branch is the ninth to open in the northern part of the country.

“It is very important that this office has opened today and the citizens of North Mitrovica now have the opportunity to visit this branch and access all the services it offers. There are postal services and telecommunications services,” said Minister Krasniqi to the media.

The opening of this branch follows the closure of nine branches of the Serbian Post Office in northern Kosovo, after information was provided by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic and Postal Communications (ARKEP) that these branches had been operating illegally in Kosovo.

The closure of these Serbian Post Office branches has been condemned by the United States and the European Union and has been considered a unilateral action by the Kosovo authorities.

In these branches, citizens received aid provided by the Serbian state – pensions and child allowances – as well as other postal services.

The Kosovo Post Office operated as a business unit within Telekom Kosovo until 2021, when it was established as a central public enterprise by a decision of the Government of Kosovo.
