Thousands of people marched across Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge today, braving heavy rain to demand peace and urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, who are enduring a severe crisis after nearly two years of war.

Protesters took part in the event, called “March for Humanity,” banging pots and pans as a symbolic act to draw attention to widespread hunger in Gaza. According to the Palestinian Authority, more than 60,000 people have been killed since the conflict began, while the UN and other organizations continue to warn of acute food shortages.

“When people around the world unite and speak up, evil can be defeated,” said Doug, a protester in his sixties, holding a placard calling for peace.

The march attracted citizens of all ages, from elderly people to families with small children. Among the participants was WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who joined the demonstration in solidarity. Many waved Palestinian flags and chanted “We are all Palestinians.”

The protest went ahead despite attempts by New South Wales Police and local authorities to block it, citing security concerns and potential traffic disruptions. However, a Supreme Court ruling the day before allowed the demonstration to proceed.

Hundreds of police officers were deployed along the route, urging protesters to remain peaceful. A similar march was held in Melbourne, where crowds also took to the streets to show solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Organizers say more protests are planned and will continue until the war stops and aid reaches Gaza’s civilians.
