The Subcommittee on Europe of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Congressman Keith Self, held a hearing titled “Assessing the Challenges Facing NATO,” with a focus on evolving threats to the Alliance and regional stability in the Western Balkans.

Chairman Self opened the hearing with a strong emphasis on the importance of Kosovo’s security, democratic progress, and the urgent need to counter malign Russian and Chinese influence in the region.

He also highlighted growing concerns over destabilizing activities originating from Serbia and Republika Srpska, both of which have drawn increased attention from U.S. and NATO officials.

During the testimony, retired Admiral Mark Montgomery assessed Serbia and Republika Srpska as destabilizing actors:

“Serbia and Republika Srpska are both bad actors that endanger the stability of the Balkans,” he stated.

The hearing underscored the strategic importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Western Balkans.
