Three people were killed and at least eight others injured after a gunman opened fire from a boat toward a crowd gathered outside a waterfront bar in a North Carolina coastal town on Saturday night, according to U.S. authorities.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time near a cluster of popular bars and restaurants in Southport, located about 48 kilometers south of Wilmington.
Investigators said the suspected shooter was aboard a small boat near the shore when he suddenly stopped and fired into the crowd before fleeing.
Roughly half an hour later, the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted the suspect and took him into custody.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity, nor the motive behind the attack.
On Sunday, multiple agencies — including the State Bureau of Investigation and the Coast Guard — continued gathering evidence at the scene and interviewing witnesses.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, and no updates have been provided on the conditions of the injured.
