Torrential rains and fierce winds have caused devastating floods in eastern Romania, leaving at least three elderly people dead and forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes, authorities said on Monday.

The severe weather swept through around 25 villages across nine counties, damaging thousands of homes, uprooting trees, and blocking major roads. Rescue teams reported that entire rooftops were torn away and vehicles swept off roads by raging floodwaters.

Romania’s national emergency response agency released dramatic footage showing houses and wooden cars being carried away by the currents, while rescue workers combed the wreckage searching for possible victims.

Officials said four helicopters were dispatched to locate villagers stranded in remote communities cut off by rising waters. Emergency crews continue to evacuate residents and provide aid as clean-up operations begin.

Heavy rainfall and flooding have become more frequent in parts of Eastern Europe, intensifying concerns about climate resilience and infrastructure preparedness in vulnerable rural areas.

The Romanian government has urged residents in high-risk zones to remain alert and follow evacuation orders as further rain is forecast in the coming days.
