President Joe Biden told congressional Democrats in a letter Monday that he will continue his re-election bid despite growing concerns about his mental health and the viability of his campaign.
“I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am determined to stay in this race, run this race to the end, and defeat Donald Trump,” Biden wrote in a letter. provided by CNN.
“The issue of how to move forward has been well on the air for over a week now. And it’s time for it to end. We have a commitment. And this is to defeat Donald Trump. We have 42 days for the Democratic Convention and 119 days for the general elections. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us,” Biden said further.
“It’s time to come together, move forward as a united party and defeat Donald Trump.”
It’s a critical week for Biden’s political future as he seeks to reduce the impact of the debate against Donald Trump.
More than a handful of top House Democrats reportedly told Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday that Biden should step down.
In the week after his debate performance, Biden personally reached out to roughly 20 House Democrats, a campaign official tells CNN, and has spoken with party leaders — including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the leader of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Reps. Nancy Pelosi and James Clyburn — with the goal of assuring them that concerns within the party are being heard.
