On Monday at 10:30 AM, the deputies of the Kosovo Assembly will gather for the 25th time to elect the Speaker of the Assembly and to constitute the ninth legislature.
The Vetëvendosje Movement, the leading party from the February 9, 2025 elections, continues to support Albulena Haxhiu’s candidacy for Assembly Speaker, although she has failed to secure the necessary majority in the previous 24 attempts.
Vetëvendosje insists that the vote be secret, a demand strongly opposed by other parties, which have boycotted the process, considering this procedure to violate constitutional spirit and parliamentary practice.
AAK deputy Bekë Berisha described the situation as “regrettable” and emphasized that historically such institutional problems have only been resolved through international intervention. He said the only hope now lies with the Constitutional Court or a new invitation from the President to the political parties.
Meanwhile, PDK deputy Nait Hasani expressed open pessimism about overcoming the deadlock, stating that only a decision from the Constitutional Court could resolve the impasse.
On the other hand, Vetëvendosje deputy Albin Kurti accused other parties of “patriarchy” regarding their refusal to vote for Haxhiu as Speaker, stressing that this reflects a clash with hierarchical and backward structures opposing the empowerment of women in leadership positions.
