Firefighters continue to battle a wildfire burning on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, leading to the closure of all hiking trails to tourists near the volcano, located close to Naples in southern Italy.
Since Friday, the fire has been raging in Vesuvius National Park, with 12 firefighting teams and six firefighting aircraft (Canadair planes) deployed to control the blaze. Reinforcements have also been called in from other Italian regions.
The park administration announced that all activities on the trail network have been suspended for safety reasons and to facilitate firefighting and cleanup operations.
According to national park statistics, nearly 620,000 people visited the Vesuvius crater in 2024.
Smoke from the fire was visible today from the nearby archaeological site of Pompeii, which remains open to tourists for now.
