The Mayor of Koçani, Lupčo Papazov, has resigned following the tragic incident in which 59 people lost their lives due to a fire at a nightclub in the town of Koçani, North Macedonia.
“I ask all relevant institutions to investigate the responsibility of all those involved! Inaction is also a form of responsibility. All details must be investigated, all shortcomings identified, and those who contributed to this tragedy should be held accountable. I am fully available to the institutions. Although I did not have direct legal authority in this case, I am ready to answer any questions about everything, including my own actions,” Papazov stated.
“There are no words to describe my pain! But, in these moments, we must demonstrate integrity, show full responsibility, and exhibit a change in our way of acting. With our behavior, we must set an example that we are against a system that does not function. If there is any basis for responsibility regarding me, I urge the prosecution to investigate and act accordingly with the law.”
“For me, after this tragedy, nothing holds the same meaning! These were our children! Many people, justifiably, have noticed why I did not speak publicly all day yesterday. But those who know me understand how broken I am and how deeply I feel what has happened. It’s difficult, and I will face it with great difficulty,” he added.
“I have worked with integrity and dedication throughout my life! Never did I think my commitment would end this way, but now I resign from this position, praying to God for the souls of our children, for their families, and for the people of North Macedonia,” said the Mayor of Kočani.
