Translation: “Kurti Government Could Have Done More, but Kosovo Was Also Treated Unfairly by the EU”

International relations expert Akri Çipa, in an interview given to ‘Bota sot’ a few days ago, spoke about the current governance in the country, offering his views on the Kurti Government.

He stated that in foreign policy, this government had opportunities to do more to strengthen bilateral relations.

“In foreign policy, the current government had the opportunities to do more in strengthening bilateral relations and in establishing new and previously untapped relationships. Kosovo today finds itself in a more precarious international position. This fact has been acknowledged by the government itself, for instance, regarding the measures taken by the European Union and member states that have imposed an international cost on Kosovo. However, even if we agree with the fact that Kosovo has been treated unfairly in this case, which is true, simply pointing out this injustice is not a policy, and even less a successful one,” he evaluated.

Furthermore, the expert states that given the expectations the government had at the beginning of its mandate in terms of foreign policy objectives, there is room for reflection and, to some extent, disappointment.

“The international situation has seen developments that go beyond Kosovo itself and involve changes in parameters that Kosovo cannot control by any means. That said, Kosovo’s foreign policy has been passive and reactive in the face of these situations, not taking the initiative itself or doing so in a tactical rather than strategic way,” Çipa emphasizes.

According to him, this is clearly reflected in the current stage of the dialogue with Serbia.

“If the current government managed to address a highly problematic asymmetry that had been created between the two parties in the dialogue during the first half of its mandate, it failed to present a compelling model for the further progress of the process, or at least one that is attractive to international allies and partners,” highlighted expert Akri Çipa.
