Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa in Brussels on Wednesday to strengthen ties with the European Union. This trip comes just days after the United States suspended planned tariffs of up to 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, following agreements on new border security measures.
Focus on Economic Relations and Security
Trudeau’s visit aims to bolster the Canada-EU relationship, with trade between the two reaching 157.3 billion CAD (105.1 billion EUR) in 2023. Despite the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the EU, not all 27 EU member states have ratified it yet, meaning its full implementation remains pending.
In addition to economic discussions, the meetings will address transatlantic security and support for Ukraine.
NATO Engagement
During his visit, Trudeau will also meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to reaffirm Canada’s commitment to working with the Alliance to maintain democracy, peace, and security globally.
