Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became emotional during a press conference on Thursday following a week of relentless criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump and the imposition of 25% tariffs on all Canadian and Mexican imports by the U.S. administration.
Trump later reversed his decision, stating that goods complying with the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) would not be subjected to tariffs until April 2, hinting at a possible exemption for Canada.
Trump has repeatedly mocked Trudeau, even suggesting that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state and referring to the prime minister as “Governor Trudeau.” In a social media post, Trump alleged that Trudeau was using the tariff dispute to boost his political campaign.
Meanwhile, Trudeau officially announced his decision to step down as leader of the Liberal Party, with the party set to elect a new leader this Sunday. During a press conference in Ottawa, Trudeau appeared emotional as he reflected on his tenure.
“Every single day in this office, I have prioritized Canadians first. That is why I am here today, to tell you that even in the final days of this government, we will not let Canadians down today or in the future,” Trudeau said before tearing up.
The next Canadian federal election is scheduled for no later than October 20, 2025. Among the frontrunners to replace Trudeau as Liberal leader is Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, who has garnered significant party support and financial backing.
Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who clashed with Trudeau over Canada’s fiscal stance and tariff preparations, is also a key contender in the leadership race.
