The Trump administration has ordered all U.S. embassies around the world to temporarily suspend appointments for student visas, as part of preparations to implement stricter vetting measures, including social media background checks for applicants.

According to an official memorandum issued by the U.S. State Department, embassies and consulates will face increased workload due to the newly planned in-depth verification process. The changes are expected to primarily affect international students seeking to study in the United States.

This move comes amid rising tensions between the Trump administration and top U.S. universities, which President Trump has criticized for their liberal stances and lack of response to antisemitism, particularly following recent pro-Palestinian protests on campuses.

The policy shift could significantly impact major U.S. universities, many of which depend heavily on international students who often pay higher tuition fees as a key source of revenue.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that the United States remains committed to national security and to rigorous screening of all individuals seeking entry.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the suspension of new student visa appointments will remain in effect until further notice. Appointments already scheduled will proceed as planned.
