Yesterday, a farewell conference was held to mark Elon Musk’s departure from his role as Special Employee at the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk and President Donald Trump appeared together to reflect on their collaboration and future plans, although little new information was revealed.
During the event, Trump praised Musk’s work at DOGE and reiterated familiar positions on issues such as international students, Harvard University, and the war in Ukraine. The president reassured the public that many DOGE employees would continue working in the federal administration and added jokingly that Musk “isn’t really going anywhere” and will “always be causing trouble.”
Musk emphasized that this was not the end of DOGE but the beginning of a new phase of cooperation. He pledged continued support for the team and affirmed his role as an advisor and friend to the president.
A memorable moment came when Musk humorously explained a bruise on his face, saying, “I challenged my 5-year-old son to punch me in the face and he did.”
Earlier this week, Musk announced his resignation from the DOGE role, where he had led initiatives to cut federal spending and reduce government size. He had the right to serve up to 130 days per year in this role, which he fulfilled.
His exit followed public disappointment over a House GOP-backed bill, supported by Trump, which increases the federal deficit directly contradicting DOGE’s goals of streamlining government operations.
