Israeli President Isaac Herzog has confirmed that he received a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump, in which Trump urged him to grant a pardon to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently on trial for three separate corruption cases.

“This morning, President Isaac Herzog received the attached letter from U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to consider granting a pardon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” Herzog’s office said in a statement Wednesday, according to international media reports cited by Telegrafi.

Netanyahu has consistently denied any wrongdoing in the ongoing court cases, which have yet to reach a verdict, while his supporters have dismissed the trials as politically motivated.

It is worth noting that Trump had previously suggested in a speech to the Israeli parliament in October that Herzog should pardon Netanyahu.

In the letter, Trump writes that he is reaching out to Herzog at a “historic moment, as together we have just secured a peace that has been sought for at least 3,000 years.”

“Through this, I urge you to fully pardon Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been a strong and decisive Prime Minister during times of war,” the letter adds.
