U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a call on social media for oil prices to remain low, following reports that Iran might shut down the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global oil shipments.

“Everyone, keep oil prices low. I’m watching,” Trump posted, implying that Iran is using the situation as a geopolitical tool.

Trump did not specify who exactly he was addressing—whether OPEC nations, oil producers, or market actors—but the timing coincides with heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf.

In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) mocked Trump on Telegram, saying:

“Rumors about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have frightened Trump!”

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important oil chokepoints. Roughly 20% of global oil supply passes through this narrow waterway, connecting the oil-rich Persian Gulf with the Indian Ocean.

The standoff adds another layer of volatility to already unstable energy markets amid the broader U.S.–Iran–Israel confrontation.
