U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Canada to join the United States as its 51st state, claiming that such a move would eliminate tariffs and benefit both nations.
In a post on Truth Social Media, Trump questioned why the U.S. is “subsidizing Canada by more than $200 billion a year” and stated, “This cannot continue. The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our beloved 51st state.”
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea since returning to office for his second term, arguing that integration would make both countries stronger and erase the “artificial line” separating them.
Canadian leaders, however, have firmly rejected the suggestion. Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly told BBC Newsnight that she takes Trump’s comments “very seriously.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister-elect Mark Carney responded to Trump’s remarks during his victory speech, stating, “Canada will never be part of America.”
