U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he will be the one to have the final word on a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
In an interview with Politico, Trump said that regardless of the proposals Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may bring during their meeting at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday, “he has nothing until Trump approves it.”
“So we’ll see what he has,” Trump added.
Zelensky had previously presented a 20-point peace plan, which envisages the creation of a demilitarized zone, with the key condition that Russia withdraw its forces from parts of the Donetsk region. Ukrainian officials described the plan as an effort “to demonstrate flexibility without conceding territory.”
Trump expressed optimism about his meeting with Zelensky, saying: “I think it will go well with him. I think it will go well with Vladimir Putin.” He also added that he “will speak with the Russian leader soon.”
According to expectations, Sunday’s meeting will focus on security guarantees, the management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and territorial control over Donbas, which Moscow claims.
