U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that killings and planned executions in Iran have been stopped, citing information he said came from reliable sources.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said:

“We have been told that the killings in Iran are stopping — they have stopped, they are stopping. And there are no plans for executions.”

He emphasized that he would continue to closely monitor the situation, after being asked whether U.S. military intervention against Iran was now off the table.

“I’m sure that if it happens, we will all be very upset. But the information I just received is that they are not going to carry out an execution. I hope it’s true. This is a big thing,” Trump added.

The president specifically referred to 26-year-old protester Erfan Soltani, who had reportedly been scheduled for execution on Wednesday.

Trump’s remarks come amid heightened international concern over Iran’s treatment of protesters and ongoing scrutiny of Tehran’s human rights record.
