U.S. President Donald Trump has made one of his most definitive statements yet regarding Ukraine’s future in the Western alliance, declaring that Ukraine’s NATO membership “was never seriously considered”, even before tensions with Russian President Vladimir Putin escalated into full-scale war.

In an interview with Politico, Trump argued that the idea of Ukraine joining the Alliance had long been unrealistic.

It has always been understood that Ukraine would not become part of NATO, long before Putin. And now they insist,” Trump said. He added that during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s first meeting with Putin, Zelensky made two demands: the return of Crimea and NATO membership.

“And he didn’t say it very politely. He’s a great salesman,” Trump added, in his characteristic tone.

A Peace Plan Kyiv Calls Unacceptable

Trump’s proposed peace plan for the Russia-Ukraine war includes a key condition: Ukraine must abandon its efforts to join NATO. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called this condition unacceptable, emphasizing that NATO membership is essential for the country’s long-term security.

Kyiv maintains that Russia’s aggression only strengthens its case for joining the Alliance, while Trump’s remarks risk reinforcing Moscow’s long-standing red lines and propaganda narratives.

A Shift in U.S. Policy?

Trump’s statement marks a sharp departure from the bipartisan U.S. policy of supporting Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration. Critics warn that such comments could undermine Western unity, embolden Russia, and weaken NATO’s credibility at a critical moment.
