President-elect Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin “very soon” after assuming office next week.

Trump did not provide a specific timeline for the meeting, which would mark the first between the leaders of the two nations since Russia launched its full-scale assault on Ukraine in February 2022.

When asked about his strategy to end the war, Trump told Newsmax, “There is only one strategy, and it depends on Putin. I don’t think he’s too enthusiastic about how the war has been going because it hasn’t gone well for him,” Trump said.

“I know he will meet me, and I will meet him very soon. I would have met him earlier, but you need to assume office first. For some things, it’s better to be officially in the position,” the President-elect remarked.

Congressman Mike Waltz, expected to serve as the new National Security Advisor, mentioned on Sunday that a phone call between Trump and Putin is anticipated “in the coming days or weeks.”
