U.S. President Donald Trump met Thursday with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, where the two discussed housing issues.

Mamdani described the meeting as productive and said he looks forward to building more housing across New York City.

“I had a productive meeting with President Trump this afternoon,” Mamdani posted on X, alongside an image of himself standing in the Oval Office next to Trump.

Mamdani also wrote on X that he had spoken with Trump by phone regarding a Columbia University student detained Thursday morning, after federal immigration agents allegedly used deception to gain entry into a campus residential building.

“In our previous meeting, I shared my concerns about Columbia student Elaina Aghayeva, who was detained by ICE this morning,” Mamdani wrote. “He has just informed me that she will be released soon.”

The meeting comes days after Trump referred to the mayor as a “good guy.” Mamdani responded during a Wednesday press conference, saying that whenever the two speak, they focus on how to keep the city moving forward.

Thursday’s meeting was not announced in advance by either leader’s office. During their last encounter, Trump offered strong praise for Mamdani, saying they had much in common. The two discussed real estate, debated the complexities of zoning codes, and considered ways to persuade a major utility provider to lower electricity rates.
