Former U.S. President Donald Trump has commented on the evolving nature of modern warfare, pointing to the widespread use of drones in the Russia–Ukraine conflict as a game-changer in military strategy.

Speaking in an interview for the Pod Force One podcast, Trump described drones as “a new thing, a new weapon, a weapon of choice.”

“If you look at the war — this terrible war with Russia, Ukraine, which we’re trying to get past — it’s all drone warfare,” Trump said.

He emphasized the surprising effectiveness of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), calling them “fast and smart” and noting that just a few years ago, few imagined their potential as frontline military tools.

“Three years ago, nobody knew they’d be this good,” Trump stated, adding, “They’re really war weapons now. Both sides are using drones at a level nobody ever imagined.”

Trump even suggested that drones are replacing traditional combat systems, including manned aircraft.

“Who would’ve thought a drone turned out to be such a powerful weapon! But it’s replacing many other weapons — even airplanes,” he said.

His remarks echo growing military analyses which suggest that UAVs have redefined warfare, particularly in Ukraine, where both Kyiv and Moscow have relied heavily on drone technology for surveillance, strikes, and psychological impact.
