U.S. President Donald Trump has overturned a key scientific determination from the Obama era that underpinned all federal actions aimed at curbing planet-warming gases, the BBC has reported, according to Rks News.
The so-called “endangerment finding” of 2009 concluded that a wide range of greenhouse gases posed a threat to public health. It became the legal foundation for federal efforts to limit emissions, particularly from vehicles.
The White House described the reversal as “the largest deregulation in American history,” stating that it would make cars more affordable by reducing costs for automakers by approximately $2,400 per vehicle.
Environmental groups argue that the move represents the most significant rollback of climate change mitigation efforts to date and have pledged to challenge it in court.
