US President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the “Peace Board,” a new body created by his administration, could potentially replace the United Nations, which he criticized as ineffective in resolving global conflicts.

Speaking at a White House press conference, Trump said the UN has failed to live up to its potential.

“The United Nations simply hasn’t been very helpful. I am a big supporter of its potential, but they never realized it,” Trump said.
“The UN should have solved all the wars that I solved. I never went to them, and it never even crossed my mind.”

The Peace Board was established as part of a Trump-brokered agreement to end the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. This week, the US president sent invitations to several world leaders to join the panel, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.

International reactions have been mixed. French President Emmanuel Macron has declined the invitation, expressing concerns over the authority and role of the Peace Board.

Meanwhile, the United Nations rejected the idea that the new structure could replace it. On Tuesday, UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher told CNN that the organization will continue to exist.

“We are clear, as are my colleagues, that the United Nations is not going anywhere,” Fletcher said.
