Following unfavorable election results for the Republican Party in the United States, President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged the setback while having breakfast with Republican lawmakers this morning.

A day after Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral race, Trump commented on the results, saying:

“I don’t think it was good for Republicans,” he admitted, adding that a broader discussion would take place once reporters left the room.

According to Donald Trump, the main reason behind the Republican losses was the government shutdown, which temporarily halted federal operations following disputes between Democrats and Republicans over the budget bill. Trump stated that polls show voters blame him and the GOP more than Democrats for the crisis.

At the same time, Trump urged Senate Republicans to abolish the filibuster, a Senate procedure allowing unlimited debate on proposed bills — often used to delay or block legislation.

“It’s time for Republicans to do what needs to be done, and that is to end the filibuster,” Trump declared, warning that otherwise, “we’ll find ourselves in a bad position and unable to pass any meaningful legislation.”

The president’s remarks come amid growing concerns within the Republican Party about its strategy and internal divisions, especially after losing control of key local elections such as the New York mayoral race.
